The remake of Age of Mythology has been very well received on Steam so far. However, this does not apply to the first available expansion
WithAge of Mythology: Retolda legendary RTS classic makes a glorious return: The remake has turned out really well,as we also state in our test.
This impression is also shared by the fans on Steam, who have given the game a 92 percent positive rating so far. However, the first DLC, which is available on release, is a different story. This is causing trouble for many players
Pure moneymaking
The additional content calledLegacy Deity Portrait Pack
costs six euros and brings into the game exactly what the name promises, namely the portraits of the gods from the original game.
New portraits of the gods were created for the remake, which were criticized even before the release and were thereforereworkedagain. However, our tester Reiner and many other fans simply like the old portraits better, here is a comparison:
While many remakes allow you to switch between old and new via a menu option, Age of Mythology: Retold offers the old portraits as DLC and thus meets with a lack of understanding from fans. Of the Steam reviews for the additional content, 84 percent are negativeand the decision to charge money for the portraits in the first place is criticized in particular:
I got it for free (with the Premium edition), but so should everyone else. These are 20 year old images and the players who are interested in the old images are the same players who have supported the series for the last 20 years.
This should be an option in the settings menu, not DLC. You shouldn’t have to pay for a portrait. Pure money-making with people who feel nostalgia for the original.
The new portraits look like generic fantasy characters from a MOBA. I really don’t understand what they were thinking. But then to have the audacity to sell us the old portraits that look really good is a whole other story. The remake is great […] but this is just shoddy.
Most fans agree: The portraits should never have been sold as DLC and should instead have been part of the remake from the outset.
In fact, the DLC is also included in the game if you buy the 20 euro more expensive Premium Edition. This also contains a new god and two as yet unrevealed expansions for the remake
What do you think about the god portraits being offered as DLC? Do you think they should already be included in the base game, or do you think the offer is fair?
