Ready to craft your career fairytale?
My blogging journey commenced when blogging was still in its infancy. I initially focused on mundane topics like what I had for lunch or daily musings that lacked depth.
However, as time progressed, my writing became more purposeful and impactful.
Recognising my background in recruitment, I began sharing valuable insights about recruiting practices, which resonated with many readers.
Gradually, this focus expanded into broader themes such as career management and entrepreneurship strategies that could benefit others navigating similar paths.
Eventually, after exiting my recruitment business due to changing interests and market dynamics, I realised the need for greater focus; thus, I decided to hone in on HR technology—a field ripe with potential.
Despite facing various setbacks while attempting to enter the HR tech industry—such as unsuccessful interviews at major companies like LinkedIn and Hired.com—I chose not to view these experiences as failures but as motivation fuelled by learning opportunities.
By documenting my learnings through blog posts detailing these experiences alongside interviews with industry founders who shared their journeys, I created resources like the Singapore Tech Market Map, which further positioned me as a go-to expert within HR tech circles.
Networking has also played an instrumental role in this journey; being recognised informally as “the Adrian from LinkedIn” has opened numerous doors for speaking engagements and panel invitations throughout this year alone—a testament to how reputation can catalyse professional growth.
Reflecting on this trajectory reminds me of Robert Kwok’s autobiography, which references an old Chinese saying: “If the tree is big enough, you will catch the wind.”
In today’s noisy environment filled with distractions, it’s crucial not only to exist but actively make your presence known so that it resonates amidst all else.
When starting out in self-employment or any new field—especially if you’re competing against seasoned professionals—it’s vital to continuously enhance your skills and raise awareness about who you are and what unique value propositions you offer potential clients or employers alike!
For instance, instead of merely trying to catch up through certifications alone (which often takes considerable time), investing strategically into SEO helped propel my blog’s visibility significantly ahead of competitors possessing decades more experience than myself.
Here are some actionable strategies designed specifically aimed at helping elevate your reputation swiftly:
1. Establish a Strong Social Media Presence: Create profiles tailored explicitly to showcase your expertise; pay special attention to elements such as header banners that effectively communicate what you do best.
2. Build Your Personal Website: Use it strategically as a platform to showcase work credentials. Consider starting a blog and contributing guest posts elsewhere (like Lifehacker or Singapore Business Review), which could drive traffic back to your site via backlinks—a critical factor influencing SEO ranking positively.
Backlinks however are not created equal. For example, getting a backlink from CNA is better than getting it from an unknown website.
That is because CNA has higher domain authority.
To figure out a website domain authority, you can install the UberSuggest chrome app and navigate to the site and click the icon.
CNA has a Domain Authority of 90/100
3. Create Quality Content Consistently: Start by writing articles regularly or even dictating them using tools like the SpeakApp, which streamlines content creation significantly compared to traditional methods, saving precious time.
This article is again drafted by dictation which shaved hours off my production time.
4. Collect Testimonials Regularly & Strategically: Utilize tools like a testimonial.to or senja.io to simplify gathering client feedback, add immense value, display prominently on websites, and boost credibility further!
5. Leverage Podcasts Effectively: If you want to connect with potential clients without coming off as overly salesy, launching podcasts allows you to invite guests who fit within your target audience while simultaneously marketing yourself effectively and creating genuine connections.
And it is so easy to launch a podcast compared to when I first started in 2016.
Back then, our recording device was a lousy iPhone with a bad microphone.
We can only do audio and each episode costs USD50 to edit as the tools then were difficult to use.
Now, you can host for free on Spotify, create your thumbnail on Canva (free) and edit your file on Descript (free).
Recording can be done on Zoom (free). Just make sure you have a good mic (I use Shure Q2u which costs less than SGD100) and you are good to go.
6. Engage Through Speaking Opportunities Actively: Seek out events directly related to your niche where presenting will position you as an authority figure—even unpaid gigs provide invaluable exposure among interested audiences eager to learn from experts!
When I first started, I would search for events that mirrors my niche and pitch to the organiser that I will volunteer to speak for free.
Do this long enough, speaking will even become a revenue stream.
7. Consider Writing a Book: Having published two books has immensely enhanced credibility; whether opting for the self-publishing route working alongside traditional publishers could potentially set apart competitors impressively during job pitches.
This is however a heavy lift as it can costs a bit.
But across all I have shared, a book is possibly the fastest way to accelerate your reputation (although not the fastest way to produce compared to the rest).
And I have not accounted for the costs.
For the latter, it was via a publisher with a business model where by authors are expected to pay for all their printed books at wholesale price.
This is how they pass their costs to you and because of that, it was easier for anyone to be an author.
You can also look for your own editor, typesetter on Upwork and have it on Amazon print-on-demand.
Lastly—and perhaps most importantly—niche down!
Specialising not just functionally but also by industry helps differentiate yourself further.
For example, I am not being perceived as merely another fractional CMO.
Instead, I focused solely on serving HR tech companies, putting me into a category of few.
I am okay with a smaller target audience since I can only take on that many assignments.
So if you are an executive coach (which is a dime a dozen right now), you should focus on specific functions such as Leadership Coach for CTOs.

If you can work with just 1%, that is more than enough to fill up your work week.
By diligently implementing these strategies while stepping outside your comfort zones amidst the learning curves faced along the entrepreneurial path, you’ll undoubtedly stand out distinctively among peers vying desperately for attention!
